Our Process: A Gentle & Thorough Check
Your oral cancer screening is a quick and comfortable part of your routine exam. Dr. Saydyk will carefully examine not just your teeth and gums, but all the soft tissues of your mouth, including your tongue, cheeks, and palate, as well as your head and neck.
We are looking for any abnormalities or changes that could be a sign for concern. It’s a simple step that provides invaluable information about your health.
What We’re Looking For:
- White, red, or yellow spots
- Lumps
- Bumps
- Ulcers
- Swollen lymph nodes in your neck
- Anything out of the ordinary in your mouth
We watch these closely and, if they don’t go away after two weeks, we take a biopsy and have them examined.
If We Find Something: A Calm, Sensible Approach
Most of the time, it's nothing to be worried about.
Our approach is always calm and measured. The problem is, the things that are dangerous and the things that aren’t often look exactly the same until examined by a specialist.
If we find a small lesion that may be from a simple irritation, we’ll often watch it for two weeks to see if it heals on its own. If a lesion looks more suspicious or doesn’t resolve, we will refer you to a trusted oral surgeon for a biopsy.
